About Sooretama Biological Reserve

Located in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, Sooretama Biological Reserve encompasses approximately 27,000 hectares of protected Atlantic Forest, one of the world's most threatened tropical forest types. Established in 1982, the reserve serves as a key sanctuary for a wide array of native flora and fauna, including several endangered species such as the jaguar (Panthera onca), the southern muriqui (Brachyteles arachnoides), and the black-fronted piping guan (Pipile jacutinga). The reserve's terrain is characterized by hilly landscapes, dense rainforest canopy, and numerous streams that contribute to its high ecological value. It plays a crucial role in safeguarding water resources and maintaining regional climate stability. As a biological reserve, Sooretama is primarily dedicated to strict preservation with limited public access to minimize human disturbance. However, scientists, researchers, and authorized visitors can explore designated trails that offer excellent opportunities for wildlife observation, birdwatching, and experiencing the natural Atlantic Forest environment. Key landmarks include the Sooretama visitor station, research facilities, and monitoring towers that support ongoing conservation efforts. The reserve is a vital part of Brazil’s National System of Conservation Units and is recognized for its contribution to maintaining one of the largest contiguous blocks of Atlantic Forest in the country. Visitor appeal is rooted in the reserve’s rich biodiversity, pristine natural environment, and opportunities for environmental education and scientific study.
